Wells Fargo Why we own it : We bought Wells Fargo as a turnaround story under CEO Charlie Scharf. In addition, the bank's net interest margin came up short, and therefore net interest income. However, bank interest income estimates depend on interest rates, a factor Wells can't control. Net interest income fell 17% year over year as deposits declined due to customers reallocating cash into higher-yielding securities. Non-interest income increased 9% thanks to higher asset-based fees driven by an increase in market valuations.

Please note, that Abbott Laboratories is not listed below as we did not own the name before the company's earnings release. Meta Platforms had one of the best earnings reports of the entire season, as sales, earnings, and cash flow trounced expectations. Despite missing earnings expectations, Coterra Energy delivered where it matters most: discretionary and free cash flow. Honeywell 's earnings results weren't great, with sales missing across the board and segment profit results coming up mixed. Given the stock's reaction, one might wonder why we don't think the earnings results from Palo Alto Networks were flat-out ugly.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon sounded the alarm on a series of risks looming over global markets. "This may be the most dangerous time the world has seen in decades," Jamie Dimon said in a JPMorgan earnings press release. Dimon also reiterated concerns of higher interest rates to come, having previously noted 7% levels as a real possibility. Added to that is growing US debt, which has drawn increasing criticism for its potential to worsen interest rates and eventually lead to fallout, if left unchecked. Despite Dimon's concerns, JPMorgan's reported strong third-quarter results, helped by higher interest rates and its acquisition of First Republic Bank earlier this year.

FIRST REPUBLICJPMorgan has agreed to undertake $173 billion of the failed bank's loans, $30 billion of securities and $92 billion of deposits after First Republic was shuttered down by authorities. Dimon had said that he expects blowback from the FRC deal earlier this month in an interview on Bloomberg TV. loadingAn acquisition of this scale will raise question on integration, execution risks, employee retention among others, analysts believe. Investment banking Morgan Stanley has certainly been the place to be among investment banks, not Goldman Sachs (GS). Second place was a tossup between Wells Fargo and Bank of America (BAC). In the case of Wells Fargo, we are seeing real improvements in the business and notable catalysts that we don't see in the others. Bank of America comes in second, while Wells Fargo is cheaper than both. People walk past a Wells Fargo bank on 14th Street on December 20, 2022 in New York City.
